日本の食材１１ ゆず

　アパートの共用庭にゆずの木があります。去年の冬はその実を眺めるだけでしたが、今年はひとつ採ってみました。レモンよりやさしい、みかんともまた違う、さわやかな香りがします。絞り汁と皮を使って、ゆず大根を作ってみました。

Japanese food 11 –Yuzu
There is a Yuzu tree in the public garden behind our apartment. I just looked at the fruits last winter and finally picked one the other day. Its aroma is gentler than lemons, different from tangerines, yet refreshing. I made some Yuzu-Daikon pickles with the juice and peels of the fruit.

A tip: They serve “Yuzu drink” complementally on board of Japan Air Lines. Please try once if you have a chance!

雪道

　日本に寒波が来ています。東京では数センチ積もった雪で大勢の人が負傷したと聞きました。慣れていなければ、雪道は危険です。そういえば、エリックもバッファローの凍りついた駐車場で転んで骨折したことがあります。痛い本人には笑い事ではありません。

Snowy streets
We are having a cold wave over Japan. I heard that many people were injured because of a few inches of snow they got in Tokyo. Snowy streets can be very dangerous, especially when you are not used to them. It reminds me of the time when Eric fell on the ground and broke his ankle on an icy parking lot in Buffalo. None of this is funny for the ones who have pain.

波

　気分屋といってしまえば、それまでかもしれません。このブログも、書きたいことが溢れるように湧いてくる日もあれば、ぼちぼち更新する頃なのに何も浮かばない日もあります。でも、そういうことって、誰にでもありますよね。

Wave
Maybe I am just moody. There are days when I have so much to share on this blog, and there are other days when I have nothing to post when it is about time to update. Well, I think everybody experiences this kind of wave.

Picture: “Kobear” is the mascot character of Kobe. He does not act cute or smile, but he tries to look cool with his short legs. I just cannot help adoring him.

世のため

　今年からエリックの扶養を外れることになり、出勤日が週3日から週4日に増えます。政府はパート就労者の社会保険負担額について議論しているようなので、どうしたら自分のためになるのかという計算も必要かもしれません。でも、働ける人が働くことは、必ず世の中のためになると信じています。

For society
I started to work 4 days a week instead of 3 this year, which makes me independent from Eric regarding social security payments. The government has been discussing the contribution amounts from part-time workers and we may need to calculate optimum ways to work. But I believe that whoever can work should work and it would be good for society, for sure.

計画

　新しいカレンダーを前に、エリックと今年の計画を話し合いました。「夏の旅行はどうしようか？」ここのところ、アジア圏を中心に出かけていたけれど、ずっと行ってみたかった北欧にも心惹かれます。それから、日本の良いところをもっと見つけてみたいし…。こういう話題は飽きることがありません。

Planning
Eric and I talked about our vacation plans for the New Year with a new calendar in front of us. “Where shall we go this summer?” We have been traveling mainly in Asia over the past couple of years, but we have always been interested in traveling to northern Europe too. We also want to discover more of the beautiful parts of Japan… This discussion never gets boring.

世代交代

　お正月はエリックと碧南に里帰りしていました。両親も少しずつ歳をとり、正月準備などを交代する必要性を感じました。今まで頑張ってくれた分、今度は私たちが恩返ししていきたいと思います。

写真：甥っ子たちのお節料理の一部。心を込めて作ったけれど、あまり食べてもらえませんでした。こういう伝統料理は子どもには受けないのかもしれません。

Generation transition
Eric and I went to Hekinan to visit my parents during the New Year’s vacation. My parents are getting older and I felt it was necessary for us to take-over tasks, including preparation of the New Year. They worked hard for us for many years and this is our time to work for them in return.
