みどりの日

 　私が子どもの頃、4月29日は昭和の天皇誕生日でした。平成の時代に入り、この日は「みどりの日」に。ところが、アメリカで生活している間に法律が変わっていたようで、今では「昭和の日」だそうです。そして、「みどりの日」は5月4日に。祝日ひとつにも、歴史があるものです。

Greenery Day
April 29th used to be the Showa Emperor’s Birthday in my childhood. Then, when the Heisei era started, that day became “Greenery Day.” I did not even know that the day was changed to be “Day of Showa” while I was living in the States. Now, “Greenery Day” is settled on May 4th. I guess each national holiday has its own history.

家

建物としての「ハウス」と、心身を休めるために帰る場所「ホーム」には、大きな違いがあります。数週間前に、「家を売ることにした」と、エリックの両親から連絡がありました。子供たちが独立した後の両親には、大きな一軒家は手に余るようで、部屋数の少ないマンションに移ることにしたのだそうです。なるほど、納得できる計画ですが、私たちの思い出も沢山詰まった「ホーム」とのお別れは、寂しいものです。

Home
There is a big difference between a “house” as a building and a “home” as a place where you go back to rest your body and soul. Eric’s parents wrote to us a few weeks ago to tell us, “We are going to sell our house.” For them, after all of their children left for independence, the house became too much to maintain and they decided to move to a condo with fewer rooms. It is a reasonable decision indeed, but “the home” carries a lot of memories of ours and we are sad to say good-bye to it.

勘違い

先週、英語で連絡を取り合っていたフランス人ドクターとの通信で難しい経験をしました。一通のメールで気に障ることがあったらしく、今夏の来日予定を突然キャンセルされました。人の助けを借りて再度連絡してみたら、何か勘違いしていたようで、丸く収まりました。結局、何が問題だったのかは分かりませんが。

Misunderstanding
I had a difficult experience in the course of communication with a French doctor in English last week. Something in my message must have upset him and he cancelled our agreement to come to Japan this summer. I had some help, contacted him again and it turned out that he had some misunderstanding so he will be coming after all. I still do not know what the problem was, though.

動向

昨年末の金正日の死後、北朝鮮の動向が気になっていました。まずは、この国のことをもっと知るところから始めようと思い、この数ヶ月間に、姜哲煥氏の『平壌の水槽』、金賢姫氏の『いま、女として』他、北朝鮮出身者たちによる本を何冊か読みました。国民の一人ひとりは、真面目で純朴な人に違いないと信じています。若い新指導者には、国際社会で認められるような国づくりに努めてもらいたいものです。

Actions
I have been watching North Korea’s actions more carefully since Kim Jong-Il passed away at the end of last year. To learn more about them, I have read some books which were written by North Koreans, including Kan Chol-Hwan’s “The Aquariums of Pyongyang” and Kim Hyon-Hui’s “The Tears of My Soul” in the past few months. I believe each citizen of this country is simple and honest, and hope the new and young leader will rebuild it to be a part of the global community.

　日本では今月から新年度が始まり、はりきっている人が多い時期です。私も職場での関わりが増え、忙しくなってきました。仕事とプライベートのバランスを上手く保っていきたいと思います。

April
This is the month when the business/school year starts in Japan and many people plow into their new positions. I have been more involved at work and that is keeping me busy, too. I will try to maintain a good balance between my work and private time.
