突然の知らせ

昨日までマリナーズでプレーしていたイチロー選手が、今日からヤンキーズに移籍したそうです。しかも、早速古巣のチームを相手に試合とは…。記者会見で涙をこらえる表情に、複雑な心中を察しました。それでも、マリナーズよりヤンキーズのほうがチームとしては強いので、彼の実力を発揮できるのではないかと期待しています。

Out of the blue
Major leaguer Ichiro was playing for the Seattle Mariners yesterday and he moved to the New York Yankees; he already fought against his old team today... From his facial expression at the press conference, which showed how he held back his tears, I could imagine his mixed feelings. However, the Yankees are stronger than the Mariners as a team and Ichiro may have a better chance to prove himself.

日本の食材13 たこ

関西で暮らすようになって、以前よりも「粉もん」をよく食べるようになりました。お好み焼きは自宅でも時々作りますが、たこ焼きは丸く作るのが難しそうなので、出先で買うことにしています。先日、来日中のアメリカ人ドクターの夫妻にも、たこ焼きをご紹介しました。奥さんはたこの吸盤が苦手でしたが、味付けは二人とも気に入られたようです。

Japanese food 13 –Octopus
Since we moved to western Japan, we have been eating more “wheaten food” than before. (Western Japan is known for its wheaten food, including Takoyaki, octopus dumplings and Okonomiyaki, which are savory pancakes.) Although I sometimes make Okonomiyaki at home, I buy Takoyaki at stores because it looks difficult to make in its round shape. I introduced this food to an American couple when they came to Japan the other day. The wife did not care for the octopus tentacles, but they both enjoyed the flavor.

悲しいニュース

 東京の上野動物園でパンダの赤ちゃんが生まれたと聞いたときには、微笑ましく思いました。パンダは白と黒の独特の模様とゆっくりの動作が愛らしい動物ですが、繁殖が難しいのだそうです。せっかくの喜びもつかの間。わずか一週間で死んでしまったというニュースに、誰もが悲しんだことでしょう。

Sad news
When I heard news of a newborn panda-bear at Ueno Zoo in Tokyo, it made me smile. Panda-bears are such cute animals with unique black-and- white patterns and slow movement, but their reproduction is very difficult. Everybody was saddened by the baby panda’s death, which lived for only a week.

雨の日は

前回も書きましたが、雨の日は家にいて時間を持て余すようなことがあります。（なんて贅沢！）この夏にスウェーデンにいるエリック方の親戚を訪ねることになっているので、その時間を利用してお土産にする和紙の箱を作りました。この中に日本の景色の写真集などを入れていくつもりです。

On a rainy day
As I wrote last time, I sometimes have a bit of spare time on rainy days. (What a luxury!) With such a spare time, I made a box with Japanese paper which I will make a gift for Eric’s relatives in Sweden when we visit them this summer. I intend to put a Japanese scenery photo book and something else inside it.

音楽療法

神戸は6月上旬から梅雨入りしていたので、もうひと月もすっきりしない天気が続いていることになります。昨日も大雨が降ったり止んだりのひどい天気で、私はほとんど外出しませんでした。しばらく使っていなかったiPodを取り出して音楽を聴いていたら、気分が明るくなりました。

Music therapy
We have been experiencing a month-long rainy season in Kobe since it started in early June this year. We had heavy rain on and off all day yesterday and I stayed at home most of the time. It was refreshing to listen to some music with my iPod, which I had neglected to use for a while.
