お疲れさま

結婚した年に買ったパソコンを８年近く使い、そろそろ買い替えの必要性を感じていました。購入当初の使い方は、メールと情報検索と買い物くらい。途中で通信講座を受けたり、ブログを始めたり、写真の整理も全てパソコンになりました。新しいパートナーは動きも早く、これからたくさんの時間を共有していけそうです。今まで頑張ってくれた友には感謝しつつお別れです。

Thank you and good-bye

The computer which I purchased in the year I got married is almost 8 years old and I needed to replace it. I started using the older model with emails, Googling and shopping, and then I took a course online, opened this blog and began organizing my photos as well. My new ‘partner’ works a lot faster and I will be spending a long time with her. I am saying thank you and good-bye to my older companion.

毅然と

やっと野田首相が領土問題について記者会見を開いてくれました。日本領土の竹島を韓国に、尖閣諸島を中国に、北方領土をロシアに狙われていることは、長らく私たちの心配事になっています。周辺諸国と大変な争いごとに発展してはいけませんが、必要な時には毅然とした態度で主張しなければなりません。

Firmly
Mr. Noda, our Prime Minister, finally held a press conference over territory issues. Japanese territory is being threatened; the Takeshima islets by South Korea, the Senkaku islands by China and the northern territories by Russia, and it has been our concern for a while. Although I do not want any serious conflicts with the surrounding countries, I think we should insist on our property with a firm attitude when necessary.

ストックホルム

　義父の従兄夫婦と田舎の別荘で一泊した際には、産休中の娘さん一家に出会いました。自然豊かな敷地には野生のキノコやベリー類があり、まさに子育てには最適です。また、チャーミングな地方都市マリーフレッドでは、義父のもう一人の従兄一家に会いました。ストックホルムまでの蒸気船で3時間半の移動には、この親戚が三世代揃って付いて来てくれました。

　近代都市ストックホルムでの宿泊は、アイスバー（氷の部屋になっているバー）のあるホテル。沈没戦艦ヴァーサ号の博物館や毎年ノーベル賞の晩餐が行われる市庁舎などを見学し、大満足のうちに帰国の途に就きました。

　振り返ってみれば、あっという間の一週間でした。日本ともアメリカとも違う文化、北欧ならではの食事、全てが興味深いものでした。数々の思い出の中でも、遠く離れた親戚との出会いには格別の感慨があり、私たちの心にしっかり刻まれました。


Stockholm

When we stayed at the couple’s summer house in the countryside, we met their daughter’s family, too. The daughter was on her maternity leave and the natural environment of the place, with wild mushrooms and berries around, seemed to be perfect to raise children. In a charming local town, Mariefred, we met another cousin of Eric’s father. His entire family of three generations came with us during and after our 3-and-half hour steamship trip to Stockholm.

In the modern capital, Stockholm, we stayed at a hotel where they have an “ice bar.” We visited the Vasa Museum of the foundered battle ship and the Stockholm City hall, where the Nobel Prize banquet is hosted every year. So our tour was completed to our satisfaction.

When we look back, the one week passed very fast. Everything was interesting including their culture, which was different from Japanese or American cultures, as well as their unique Scandinavian cuisine. The encounters to our distant relatives were the most meaningful among the many memories we made this time.

ヘルシンボリ

コペンハーゲンから電車で北へ1時間ほど向かい、一番スウェーデンに近い街に到着しました。ここでエリックの父の従兄と合流。彼と義父とエリックは皆、同じ青い目をしています。デンマークからスウェーデンへの国境はあっけなく、約20分のフェリー移動にはパスポートも要りませんでした。

　小さな宝箱のような街、ヘルシンボリ。ここで出会った親戚一家は、ひとつ屋根の下三世代が仲良く暮らしています。私たちを温かく迎えてくれた彼らのおしつけでない親切には、懐かしさのような心地よさを感じました。涼しい夏の日の朝、樺の林をゆっくり散歩したことは、今回の旅行で一番の思い出です。

　この後、義父の従兄夫婦は、車で何時間もかけて先祖のお墓参りに連れていってくれました。そして、スウェーデンの首都ストックホルムに着くまでに、また大切な出会いがありました。


Helsingborg

We traveled by train for about an hour to the north from Copenhagen, which led us to the Danish town closest to Swedish territory. We met Eric’s father’s cousin there. He, my father-in-law and Eric all have same blue eyes. The border between the two countries was very easy to cross and we did not even need to show our passports during our 20-minute ferry ride.

Helsingborg is a little treasure box for me. The family we met here is living happily with three generations under one roof. Their humble and sincere kindness almost felt nostalgic and made me very comfortable. My best memory of the trip was a long walk in birch woods on a cool summer morning in this town.

After that, the couple of Eric’s father’s cousin took us to their ancestor’s cemetery, which turned out to require a long drive of several hours. Then, on our way to Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, we had more of these precious encounters.

コペンハーゲン

 　今年に入ってからエリックがコツコツと計画してきた北欧旅行を実現しました。まず訪れたのはデンマークの首都コペンハーゲン。ビールと高級食器と人魚姫くらいしか知りませんでしたが、やはりそれらを目当ての旅行者は多かったようです。

印象に残ったのは、カラフルで可愛い街並み。風情はあっても歩きづらい石畳を歩き回りました。お酒を飲まない私が楽しんだのは、ビールよりもペイストリー。特にチョコレートやナッツを使ったものが味わい深く美味しかったです。高級食器は見るだけにして、自分用に人魚姫の絵本を買いました。

ちょうどロンドンでオリンピックが始まった週末でしたが、しばらくテレビもインターネットもお休みして、ライブで異国情緒を味わうことにしました。


Copenhagen

Our dream of a Scandinavian vacation finally came true, which Eric had been planning carefully since New Year’s Day. Our first destination was Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark. All I knew about the country were beer, expensive dinnerware and the Little Mermaid, and those were actually many tourists’ attraction.

What I liked most was the colorful landscape of the city. We walked a lot on the stone-paved streets which looked pretty yet were tough for our feet. I enjoyed the pastries instead of the beer as I no longer drink alcohol. I especially liked pastries with chocolate and nuts because they were very rich and tasty. I enjoyed looking at expensive dishes and purchased a picture book of the Little Mermaid for myself.

It was the weekend when the Olympic Games started in London, but we stayed away from TV and the Internet to enjoy the live foreign atmosphere.
