私の好きなお豆腐屋さんの向かいには、私の好きなパン屋さんがあります。通りまで漂ってくるパンの香りに誘われると、そのドアを開けずにはいられません。看板商品のクリームパンはもちろんのこと、クロワッサンのサクサク感やクランベリーの甘酸っぱさも捨てがたく…。でも、この夏のお気に入りはレモンカードの入ったペイストリーです。 

Marui Bakery 
Across the street from my favorite Tofu shop is my favorite bakery. I cannot help opening their door when I smell the aroma of freshly baked goods when I pass there. Their signature cream-filled buns, of course, crispy croissants and sweet-and-sour cranberry pastries cannot be ignored… but I have been favoring lemon-curd-filled pastries this summer.

あべのべあ

久しぶりに大阪まで行きました。あべのハルカスで開催されている高円宮妃久子殿下の写真展を拝見しかったこともあり、エリックの誕生日のイベントとして一緒に出かけました。今日もとても暑かったので、景色は展望台から見ただけで、街歩きはしませんでした。この超高層ビルのマスコットは「あべのべあ」だそうです。 

Abeno Bear 

We went to Osaka after a long interval. I wanted to see the photo exhibition by Princess Hisako at Abeno Harukas and invited Eric for his birthday. We enjoyed the landscape from the observatory and did not stroll around in the city since it was very hot today. I learned that the mascot of this skyscraper is “Abeno Bear.”

座禅体験

先週から来日中のアメリカ人ドクターと一緒にお寺で座禅を体験させて頂きました。足を組んで床に座る代わりに椅子を使い、時間も短めの略式でしたが、基本を教えて頂きました。線香が一本燃え尽きる間、姿勢と呼吸を保ち、心を無にすること…。体験後の住職さんとドクターの対話から学べたことも、ありがたく思いました。 

Zen Experience 
I had a chance to experience Zen meditation at a temple with an American doctor who has been in Japan since last week. We used chairs instead of sitting on the floor with our legs crossed and the duration was shorter, but we still learned the basics in this simplified style. We maintain our postures and breaths to empty our minds while a stick of incense burns down… I appreciated the dialogue between the priest and the doctor after the experience, from which I learned some more.

Ｔシャツ

神戸に来てから、毎夏のバーゲンでバナナリパブリック（アメリカのブランドだけど）の無地Tシャツを買っています。今年は丸首の紺色。こうして並べてみると、各年の夏の思い出がよみがえります。最初に買ったものは少し古びてきたから、そろそろパジャマの仲間入りかな…。

I have been purchasing a Banana Republic (an American brand) plain t-shirt at their sale every summer since I came to Kobe. This year’s pick is a round-neck navy. The collection brings back many memories of each season. The first one may join my pajamas soon since it is getting worn out a bit…

好機

去年に移転してから間遠になっていた図書館通いを再開したところ、ずっと読みたいと思っていた村上春樹さんの『1Q84』の第一巻を見つけて、すぐに借りました。そして、しばらく見かけなかった『ビッグイシュー』も、新しい販売員さんが現れたので、最新号を購入しました。これらは小さな例だけれど、本当に欲しいものを心に思い続けていたら、こんな風に手に入るチャンスが来るのかもしれません。 

Chances 

I have resumed my regular visit to the local library which was distanced since the change of their location last fall. I happened to find the first volume of “1Q84” by Haruki Murakami, which I had wanted to read for a while, and borrowed it immediately. Then, I came across a new vendor of “Big Issue” after missing this magazine for a while and I purchased the newest volume. These are just some minor examples, but now I think that there may be chances to get what I really want if I keep wishing in my mind.

小さな貢献

いつも食卓で使っているスポンジワイプは、卓上に水分を残さず拭き取れるところが一番気に入っていますが、色々あるデザインも家事を楽しませてくれます。そろそろ交換が必要だったので買いに行ったら、東北の復興支援に協賛しているものがありました。説明書によると、売上の一部が被災地の住宅建設やソーラーパネル設置などに役立てられるそうです。 

A Tiny Contribution

I like this wiping cloth because it does not leave water on the table and it comes in various designs which make my housekeeping enjoyable. I went to pick up a new cloth for replacement and found this one which supports the reconstruction of Tohoku. According to the explanation card, some portion of the sales will be donated to build houses, put-up solar panels, etc. in the afflicted areas.
