　手を差し延べたい！食料や毛布を届けたい！それらを必要としている人たちが大勢いることを知っているのに、今はまだ個人が被災地を訪れることはできません。家族と家と大切にしていたものを全て流されて、絶望的な気持ちになっている被災者の皆さんを、何とか励ましてあげたいものです。

　あの恐ろしい地震と津波。今日もまだ続く余震と原子力発電所の危機。容赦のない寒さ。私たち夫婦は、大勢の人々と同様に、これらのニュースを日々刻々と追っています。毎日食事をいただくときにも、暖房のスイッチを入れるときにも、被災者の皆さんを想いながら、24時間申し訳ない気持ちで過ごしています。

　私たちは幸いこれまで大きな災害に遭ったことがありません。せめて今できることとして、寄付金を送り、ボランティアの情報を集めています。支援を実現できるようになったときにすぐ動けるように、心身の準備をしておきたいと思います。

　皆それぞれに苦しみと悲しみを抱えていても、大声で泣いたり騒いだりするのは日本人の表現方法ではないため、もしかしたら外国の人には不思議に映っているのでしょうか。一日本人として、海外の皆さんからのご心配とご配慮には感謝しています。


24/7

I want to help! I want to deliver food and blankets! We know there are so many people who are in need, but there is no way to reach them individually at this point. I wish to comfort people who lost their families, homes and everything they cherished and who are feeling hopeless.

Those dreadful quakes and tsunami, after-quakes and the crisis at the nuclear plant which are still going on today, also merciless cold weather – Eric and I have been following all the news every minute everyday in the same way as many others do. We are feeling sorry for the sufferers 24/7, especially when we have food at our table and when we turn our heaters on.

Fortunately, we have never met such kind of horrible disasters in our lives. What we can do is just to send money as donations and collect information for volunteer activities. All we can do for now is to be prepared physically and mentally for the time we can actually do something to help.

By the way, it is not quite a Japanese way of expression to cry or scream when we have pain and sorrow in our hearts and it might look strange to non-natives. I appreciate their concern and offers of help as a Japanese.

　神戸は大丈夫です。実家の両親も無事です。今回の大地震と津波では多くの犠牲が出ており、無傷の自分たちに何かできないものかもどかしく感じています。

We are fine in Kobe. My parents are fine, too. They have been losing so much in the eastern Japan and we, without even a scratch, feel frustrated to be unable to help.

二度目の春

　季節は巡り、神戸で二度目の春を迎えています。先日はエリックと梅林公園まで歩いて行きました。去年は初めて見て驚いた野生のイノシシも、今ではすっかり見慣れました。そろそろウリ坊が現れる頃かもしれません。

Spring again
Seasons go around and this is my second spring in Kobe. Eric and I walked to the plum park the other day. The wild boars, which scared me last year, now look so familiar to me. We might come across boar piglets sometime soon.

チューリッヒ街歩き

　チューリッヒでは自分の時間をもつことができたので、街歩きを楽しみました。ちょうど週末に当たり、ほとんどのお店が閉まっていましたが、逆に普段は忙しいビジネス都市の静かな一面を見ることができました。印象的だったのは、日曜の朝に教会の鐘の音が響き渡っていたことです。2月でも意外に暖かく、帰り際まで雪に降られなかったことは幸いでした。

Strolling in Zurich
Since I had some time for myself in Zurich, I enjoyed strolling around the city. It happened to be on a weekend and most of the stores were closed, but it gave me a chance to see the quieter side of this all-business city which usually seems to be restless. What was impressive is the sound of church bells echoing around on Sunday morning. It was unexpectedly warm for February and I felt lucky not to have any snow until the time to leave for home.

ハイドパークにて

　出張でロンドンとチューリッヒに行きました。ロンドンでは、ハロッズ近くに滞在したのに、時間がなくて買い物は断念。でも、最終日の朝、コーヒーを買ってハイドパークに行きました。まだ寒かったため、ベンチには誰も座っていませんでした。散歩中のラブラドールが駆け寄ってきて、少しだけ一緒にボール遊びをできたことが良い思い出になりました。

At Hyde Park
I went to London and Zurich on business. Although I stayed in the neighborhood of Harrods, I did not have much time and gave up my chance to shop. On the morning of my last day, however, I went to Hyde Park with a cup of coffee. It was still chilly and nobody was sitting on a bench. A Labrador, who was being walked, came up to me and we played with a ball for a little while. It made a good memory.

母の声

　結婚して最初の5年間はアメリカで暮らしていたこともあり、ほとんど実家に電話しませんでした。（大きな時差があることと、当時はスカイプを知りませんでした。）分からないことのあるときは義母に尋ね、体調の悪いときはエリックの助けを借り、故郷が恋しいときにはじっと耐えていました。1年前に帰国してからは、ほぼ毎週母に電話しています。何も気兼ねなく話せることの有難さを実感じています。

来週から出張があるため、次回の投稿は月末頃になりそうです。

Mother’s voice
In the first five years of our marriage, I almost never called my parents since we were living in the states. (There is a big time difference and I did not know of Skype back then.) I asked Eric’s mother when I had questions, I had Eric’s help when I was not feeling well and I endured when I missed my parents. I have been calling my mother almost every week since I came back to Japan. How nice it is to talk with her without constraint!

My nest post will be at the end of this month since I will be out of town for business from next week.

台湾旅行２ 知新

　今の台湾には勢いがあります。交通網を始めとする公共設備は最新式で整えられ、デパートやレストランも大変賑わっていました。その反面、自動車等の排気ガスによる大気汚染も問題になっています。マスクをかける通行者をよく見かけました。

　教育水準も高く、台北市内では英語と日本語を話す人が多いため、エリック得意の中国語を使う機会が少なくて残念。でも、地元のスーパーや屋台で買い物したときに役立ったことは間違いありません。

　今後の台湾の更なる発展に期待しています。

Trip to Taiwan 2 –Exploring for the future

Today’s Taiwan is running with the wind at their back. Their public facilities including the transportation system have been built with the latest technology, and their department stores and restaurants were all so crowded. On the other hand, air pollution has been a serious problem. We saw many passengers wearing masks on the streets.

With their high level of education, there are many people who speak English and/or Japanese in Taipei. It was a pity that Eric did not have many opportunities to use his good Chinese. Well, it was definitely useful when we shopped at local supermarkets and street stands.

I look forward to seeing more development in Taiwan.
