ファーガソン

ミズーリ州ファーガソンにおける白人警察官による黒人少年射殺事件を発端とした暴動のニュースが、日本でも連日流されています。アメリカの市民でも住民でもない私にも、アメリカ社会について色々思うところがありました。 

まず、法律で銃の使用が禁じられていたら、このような事件は起こりにくかったのではないかという疑問。次に、普段は「問題ない」ことにされている人種差別の問題が、未だ根強く残っていることの再認識。そして、人の感情が爆発するときには、そこに至るまでに、小さな怒りの種のようなものがいくつも芽生えているのではないか、という心理分析など…。 

アメリカでは感謝祭も終わり、楽しくクリスマスの準備をしている人も多いことでしょう。問題を抱えながら明るく振る舞うことも良いけれど、一人ひとりがこの問題に真剣に向き合って、もっと良い国にしていってくれることを願います。 

Ferguson

In recent days in Japan, we have heard news of riots provoked by the incident of a young African-American man shot to death by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri. I have had a few thoughts about American society although I am neither a citizen nor a resident of the country at the moment.

First of all, risks of this kind of incident should have been a lot less if the use of guns is legally prohibited. Then, I reaffirmed that the racial problem, which is treated as if there is “no problem” under usual circumstances, still remains deep-rooted. I also made a psychological analysis; maybe people have small seeds of anger growing in their minds before they reach their emotional eruptions...

Thanksgiving is over and now many American people must be getting ready for Christmas in a happy mood. It is okay to act cheerfully even when there is a problem, but I hope everybody would take this matter seriously to make America a better country.

猛吹雪

バッファローの大雪のニュースを見ました。私の5年間の生活では経験したことのないような猛吹雪だったようです。週末に義父母への連絡を試みましたが、旅行に出かけていたようで、通じませんでした。現在は一時的に気温が上がっているらしく、そうなると融雪による洪水の恐れがあります。冬本番はまだこれから。どうか、あまり厳しい季節になりませんように。 

Whiteout 

I saw the news of very heavy snow in Buffalo. It looked like an extreme blizzard which I never experienced in my 5 years there. We tried to contact Eric’s parents during the weekend, but it seemed they were traveling somewhere and we could not reach them. Now, the temperature in the area is rising higher temporarily and melting snow could cause flooding. This is still the beginning of winter and I hope this will not be a severe one.

招かれざる客

アパートにある柚子の木が沢山実をつけていたので、そろそろ採らせてもらおうと思っていたら、先客がありました。週末の朝、隣家の奥さんが両手いっぱいに持ち帰っていました。アパートの住人でない人に先を越されるとは…！　悔しいので私も急いでふたつほど収穫し、果汁と皮を使ってなますを作りました。

Unwelcome Guest 

The yuzu tree at our apartment was bearing a lot of fruits and it was my plan to pick some soon, but somebody else was there before me. The wife who lives next to our apartment was carrying both hands full of yuzu on a weekend morning. It made me mad because she does not pay rent here…! I immediately picked a couple and made some salad using their juice and peels.

前触れ？

左肩の痛みは少しずつ軽くなり、回復したようです。でも、今回の痛みは本物の四十肩の前触れかもしれないので、ストレッチは続けていこうと思います。これとは別に、神戸市の奨励に応えて、乳がんと子宮頸がんの検診を受けました。神経質になることもないけれど、年齢相応の用心をしておこうと思います。

Prodrome? 

My left shoulder has gotten lighter gradually and seems to be recovered, but I will continue a regular stretching since this could have been a prodrome of a real frozen shoulder. Besides this, I had screenings of breast and cervical cancers responding to encouragement by the city of Kobe. There is no need to be too sensitive, but it is a good idea to be careful appropriately for my age.

Picture: I missed a chance to mention my birthday which was celebrated again this year by my co-workers over a week ago.

四十肩

2、3日前から左肩が痛くて、うまく動かせません。これといった原因も思い当たらないことから、四十肩ではないかと思います。無理のない範囲でストレッチなどをして、少し様子を見てみます。これが年を取るということなのでしょうか…。 

Frozen Shoulder 

My left shoulder started to ache a few days ago and I have difficulty moving it. I suspect it is a frozen shoulder since there is no particular reason for such pain. I will see how it goes while trying out some mild stretching. Does this mean I am getting old…?

安全第一

この連休は、新車で初めて碧南まで帰省しました。久しぶりの長距離ドライブは、運転だけで疲れてしまう部分もあったけれど、バスや新幹線では運ぶのが難しい荷物も車なら楽勝です。カーナビの扱いやETCゲートの通過には、慣れるまでに少し時間がかかるかもしれませんが、まずは安全第一で運転していこうと思います。 

Safety First 
We visited my parents in Hekinan for the first time with our new car this long weekend. A long-distance drive made us tired in a way, especially after a long absence, but it was a lot easier to deal with luggage which was difficult to carry on a bus or a bullet train. We may need some practice to be used to the navigation system and the ETC (electronic toll collection) system, and we will try safe driving by all means.
