ファラフェル

今夜、エリックがサウジアラビアに向けて発ちました。また、英語教育のカンファレンスに出席するためです。日本に残る私も、少しばかり中近東の気分を味わうために、ファラフェルを作ろうかな。 

＊ファラフェルとは：ひよこ豆の粉末とハーブやスパイスを混ぜ、丸めて油で揚げたベジタリアン料理。私はこの食べ物をアメリカで知りました。 

Falafel

Eric left home for Saudi Arabia this evening to attend another conference of English education. I am staying home, but maybe I will fix some falafel for myself to enjoy a little taste of the Middle East. 

*Falafel: these are deep fried vegetarian dumplings made of ground chickpeas, herbs and spices. I learned this food in the States.

玄米ごはん

なかなか上手く炊けなかった玄米をフィスラーの圧力鍋で炊いてみたら、もちもちと美味しく仕上がりました。白米と比べると、食物繊維やカルシウムやビタミンBが豊富で、身体に良いそうです。でも、2食続けて玄米を食べたら、お腹の調子が良くありませんでした。身体に良いものを食べることも大切ですが、ゆっくり食べることも大切です。 

Brown Rice 

I had not been successful with brown rice cooking before I tried it with my Fissler’s pressure cooker. It turned out nice and sticky this time. Compared to white rice, brown rice contains more fiber, calcium and vitamin B and is better for you. I had some digestive problem, however, after eating brown rice twice in a row. It is important to choose good food for you, and it is also important that you eat slowly.

折り紙

先日、ロシアで小学生の教育に折り紙を取り入れているという話を聞きました。子どもの頃から折り紙で育まれた日本人の根気や細やかさが、日本製品の質の高さにつながっているという考えからだそうです。習ってから何年経っても、基本の手順は手が覚えているものです。

Origami

I heard that they are adopting origami in elementary education in Russia the other day. It is based on an idea that high-quality Japanese products come from the patience and pinpoint precision of Japanese people who are trained with origami from childhood. Many years have passed since I learnt it, but my hands still know the basic patterns.

地震

土曜日の早朝5時半過ぎに、神戸では震度4の地震がありました。キッチンの棚に並べてあったグラス類は無事でしたが、テレビの上に置いてあったリモコンは床に落ちました。震源地の淡路島では、1995年以来の大きな揺れで、多数の家屋が損壊したそうです。日本が地震活動期に入っているという説もあります。本当に大地震が起きたら、一体どうすればいいのでしょうか？

Earthquake

We had a level 4 earthquake a little after half past 5 Saturday morning. Our glasses on the kitchen shelf were safe, but a remote on the TV fell onto the floor. It was the first large quake since 1995 under Awaji Island, which was the epicentre of this most recent quake, and many houses were damaged there. One theory is that we have entered a period of brisk seismic activity. If a large quake really comes, what are we going to do?

The Big Issue

街角で手売りされているこの雑誌は、ホームレスの人たちの自立を促進するためのもので、売上の一部が彼らの収入になるそうです。4月にしては風が冷たかった今日も、薬局の外で辛抱強く立ち続ける男性を見かけたので、声をかけて一部購入しました。薄いながらに、しっかりした雑誌で、社会的立場の異なる人々の意見を紹介したり、日本と世界の問題提起や情報提供をしてくれています。

The Big Issue

This magazine is sold by homeless people on street corners to promote their independence. They receive a part of their sales. I saw a man standing patiently outside of a pharmacy today, when the wind was a little too cold for April, and spoke to him to purchase a copy. It introduces opinions of people with different social status and also raises problems and provides information of Japan and around the world. It is thin as a magazine, yet it is actually the Big Issue.

ハクション・ファッション

先日、フランスよりお越しのドクターが、日本人のマスク姿を不思議に思われたようでした。私も外出するときには必ずマスクを使っています。自分が花粉やホコリを吸いこまないためと、前触れなく出てしまうクシャミで周囲に迷惑をかけないためです。でも、せっかく暖かくなってきたというのに、確かにあまりファッショナブルではないかもしれません。 

Achoo Fashion 

A French doctor thought it was strange that so many Japanese people were wearing masks when he came to Japan the other day. I always wear a mask when I go outside. It is for myself not to inhale pollen and dust. It is also for other people to not be bothered by my unpredictable sneezing. I still understand his viewpoint though; it is true that wearing masks does not look very fashionable especially in this warming season. 

By the way, Japanese “achoo” is pronounced as “hakushon” and I thought it rhymes with “fashion.”
