神戸の冬

　日本のこの冬は例年にない寒さだそうです。神戸では雪も積もっていないのに、街では厚着の人ばかり。バッファローの冬で鍛えられた私たちには、少し大げさに映ります。それでも、どこか暖かいところに行きたくなるもので、週末からエリックと台湾に行ってきます。

Winter in Kobe
They say this winter in Japan is colder than usual. People in Kobe are dressed heavily when there is no snow on the ground. Their clothes look too heavy for those of us who are trained in Buffalo’s winter. We still feel like going somewhere warmer so we are leaving for Taiwan this weekend.

日本の食材５ ひじき

　子どもの頃はこれが何なのかよく分からず、あまり好きではない給食のおかずのひとつでした。ひじきは海藻の一種で、スーパーでは乾燥した状態で売られています。カルシウム・食物繊維・鉄分を多く含む健康的な食材です。これを大豆やにんじんと一緒に炊いたものは、我が家でも定番の一品です。

Japanese food 5 – Hijiki
When I was a child, I was not sure what it was. It was not my favorite side dish of the school lunch menu. Hijiki is a kind of seaweed and is sold dry at supermarkets. It is rich in calcium, fiber, iron and is a very healthy food. I often cook it with soybeans and carrots for our at-home dinners.

1.17

　16年前の1月17日に阪神・淡路大震災がありました。当時は震源から200kも離れた愛知県に住んでいましたが、かなりの揺れを感じたことを覚えています。今の我が家のある辺りでも大きな被害があったと聞きました。エリックと災害ではぐれてしまった場合の待ち合わせ場所を再確認しました。

The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake happened on January 17th sixteen years ago. I remember quite a quake in Aichi, 125 miles away from the epicenter, where I was living at the time. I have heard that there was a major damage in my current neighborhood. Eric and I reconfirmed a spot to meet in a case we get separated in such disasters.

弾丸

　たびたび耳にするアメリカでの銃撃事件のニュースには心が痛みます。バッファローに住んでいた頃、自宅に銃を持つ知り合いがいました。彼はこう言いました。「俺は家族を守るために銃を持っているんだ。」でも、銃は守る場合よりも襲う場合に使われる方が、圧倒的に多いのではないでしょうか。そもそも銃のない社会ならば、家族も別の方法で守れるのではないでしょうか。

Bullets
It is sad to hear about these gun shooting incidents in the states. When we were living in Buffalo, we knew a person who had a gun in their home. He said, “I own a gun to protect my family.” Aren’t there many more cases of attacking with guns than of protecting with them? Wouldn’t there be other ways to protect families if there are no guns in the society to start with?

　インターネットでアメリカからブーツとTシャツなどを注文し、年明け早々に届きました。円高とクリスマス後のセールで、お得に買い物をしたかったのです。ところが、ブーツに関税が課税されていました。神戸税関に問い合わせてみると、革製品の税率は高く設定されているそうです。結局、あまり節約できませんでしたが、ひとつ勉強になりました。

Aha
I ordered a pair of boots and some t-shirts from the states online and they were delivered early in the New Year. I wanted to take advantage of the strong yen and the after-Christmas sale prices. The boots, however, were taxed at customs. I called Kobe Customs to ask questions and the officer said that the tax rate is set pretty high for leather items. After all, I did not save much, but I gained a lesson.

新年の抱負2011

　年末に悲しい出来事があったとはいえ、私自身は心穏かに新年を迎えることができました。元日には、実家で兄一家と一緒に料理を囲み、二人の甥っ子たちとゲームをして遊びました。2011年の私の抱負は、１）エリックと夫婦として成長すること、２）神戸で友だちを増やすこと、です。

My New Year’s resolution 2011
Despite the sad event at the end of last year, I started the New Year in a peaceful state of mind. We had dinner with my brother’s family at my parents’ home and Eric and I played a game with our two nephews. My New Year’s resolutions of 2011 are; 1) Growing as a couple with Eric, and 2) Making more friends in Kobe.
