月の兎

月がきれいな季節です。現代では宇宙探査が進み、月に見える模様はクレーターの影だと誰もが知っていますが、それでは少々味気ないような気がします。月の模様を「餅つきウサギ」に見立てた日本人をはじめ、様々な想像をめぐらせていた昔の人々には、私たちとは違う秋の楽しみ方があったことでしょう。台風のため、明日の仲秋の名月を見られないのは残念です。

A rabbit on the moon

This is the season when the moon looks clear. With our modern technology of space exploration, everybody knows that the patterns on the moon are the shadows of craters, but it sounds a bit tasteless. People in the past must have had different ways to enjoy fall with their imaginations including ancient Japanese people who described the patterns as “a rabbit making rice-cakes.” It is a shame if we cannot see the full moon of the season tomorrow because of an oncoming typhoon.

神戸映画サークル

派手なハリウッド映画もさることながら、大きな劇場では公開されないような地味な映画も好きです。そのような世界各国の作品を月替わりで上映しているサークルの存在を知り、この週末に入会しました。今月はフィンランドの作品でしたが、この夏北欧に行ったこともあり、後からじんわり来るストーリーと共に風景や言葉の響きなども楽しみました。

Kobe Cinema Circle

I like unfancy movies which are not shown at major theatres as well as fancy Hollywood movies.  I found a club which presents such modest movies from around the world every month and I joined the club this weekend. The film of the month was a Finnish one and it reminded me of our Scandinavian trip of this past summer.  I enjoyed the story with subsequent ideas and local sceneries and the sounds of the Finnish language were also interesting.

ディカフェ

アメリカで暮らしていた頃、不眠に悩まされた時期があり、コーヒーを通常のものからディカフェ（カフェイン抜き）に変えたことがありました。その名残で、午後以降にコーヒーを飲むときには、今もディカフェを選ぶようにしています。ディカフェのコーヒー飲料もコーヒー豆もアメリカでは当たり前に売られていたのに、日本ではスターバックスの1種類しか私は知りません。もう少し手に入りやすくなると良いのですが…。

Decaf

In the past, I suffered from insomnia when I was living in the States and I switched my coffee from regular to decaf at that time. From this old habit, I still choose decaf when I drink coffee later than mid-afternoon. Decaf coffee and beans were everywhere in the States, but I have found only one kind of decaf beans which are sold at Starbucks in Japan. It would be nice if it was easier to pick decaf here, too…

日本の食材14 きのこ

来週から大学の新学期が始まるのを前に、エリックが一人で出かけることになりました。そういうときは、私がきのこを食べるチャンスです。蒸してマリネを作ろうか、バターで炒めて黒胡椒でいただこうか…。食欲の秋が始まる予感です。

Japanese Food 14 –Mushrooms

Before the college recommences for the new semester, Eric is going to travel alone this weekend. This is a chance for me to enjoy mushrooms. Shall I steam them to marinade, or shall I stir-fly them with butter and black pepper…? This may be the beginning of the appetizing fall season.

防災の日

今年は「防災の日」の9月1日が週末に当たったため、今週に入ってから防災訓練を行う自治体や公共施設が多いようです。我が家でも毎年、災害時の連絡手段を確認し合います。防災スペシャリストによると、家族が一緒にいないときに災害が発生したら、まずはそれぞれが自分の命を守り、状況が落ち着いてからお互いを探すように、ということです。

National Disaster Prevention Day

Our National Disaster Prevention Day, September 1^st, happened to be on a weekend this year and local governments and public facilities are holding emergency drills this week. We talk about how to meet up with each other in case of disaster every year at home, too. According to a disaster-prevention-expert, it is important that each individual secures their lives first when families are not together and then they could look for family members after circumstances calm down.
