おもてなし

2020年東京オリンピック招致のときに使われたこの言葉が、今年の流行語に選ばれるように思います。先日、エリックの仕事関係でアメリカ人の来客があり、のり巻きやおでんでおもてなしをしました。高価な食材は何も使わなかったけれど、ひとつずつをゆっくり味わってくださる様子を見て、私の気持ちは伝わったのではないかと思いました。 

Omotenashi 

The Japanese word “omotenashi,” which means hospitality, was used at the 2020 Olympic bidding presentation of Tokyo. It may be picked as a buzzword of the year. We had an American guest from Eric’s work the other day and I cooked sushi rolls and oden, vegetable stew in broth. Although I did not use any fancy ingredients, I felt that my hospitality was appreciated from his way of enjoying every bite of the food.

ユニクロ

64周年の創業祭を開催しているとは知らずにユニクロに買い物に行ったら、すごい人混みでした。それでも買おうと思っていたエリックの通勤用パンツと私の散歩用の暖かいパンツをゲット。最近は海外にも積極的に進出しているようなので、機会があれば他国のお店にも寄ってみたいと思います。

UNIQLO 

We went shopping to UNIQLO without knowing that they were holding their 64^th anniversary sale and were astonished with the huge crowd of people there. We still got Eric’s work pants and my walking pants which are nice and warm. I have heard that they are proactively expanding their business abroad and I am curious to visit one of their overseas locations when I have a chance.

戦場のメリークリスマス

リラックスできる音楽はないかと探していたところ、ある人から「戦場のメリークリスマス」を薦められました。以前から知っていたはずなのに、改めて聴いてみると今の気持ちにしっくり合い、新しい曲に出会ったような感覚です。iTunesで坂本龍一の曲を色々試聴してみたら、瞑想に向いている感じのものが沢山ありました。 

Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence 

When I was seeking some relaxing music, somebody suggested “Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence.” It felt as if I heard a new tune which fit my present state of mind although I had known it for a long time. I also tried other music by Ryuichi Sakamoto on iTunes and found some pieces which may be suitable for meditation.

冬？

大型台風がフィリピンを襲ったニュースを聞きました。大きな被害が出ているそうで、とても気の毒です。神戸では一気に季節が進み、先月まで台風が来ていたことを忘れそうになりながら、慌ててセーターや毛布を引っ張り出しました。明日はインフルエンザの予防接種に行きます。 

Winter? 

I have been hearing news of a big typhoon which had hit the Philippines. I feel very sorry to know that they are experiencing heavy damage. Seasons are changing rapidly in Kobe and I almost forgot that we had typhoons here last month as I pulled our sweaters and blankets out of the closet. We are going to have flu shots tomorrow.

そんなつもりでは…

父が退院し、母の誕生日が近いこともあって、週末に帰省しました。二人を喜ばせるためというよりは、二人の顔を見て自分が安心したかったというのが正直なところ。親孝行のつもりで、私が運転して食事に連れて行ったら、支払いは母が済ませてくれました。帰り道、うっかり信号無視で切符を切られたら、こちらは父が同情して罰金分を援助してくれました。なんだか自分にがっかりです。

Was Not My Intention… 

I visited my parents this weekend since my father came out of the hospital and my mother’s birthday was coming up. It may be more accurate to say that I wanted to see them to comfort myself rather than wanting to please them. I took them out for lunch to be a good daughter, but my mother paid for it. Then, on our way back, I missed stopping at a red light and got a ticket. My father gave me some money for the fine. I felt disappointed with myself.

誕生日

先週、職場で少し早めに誕生日を祝ってもらいました。同じ日に来日されたイギリス人ドクターからは、お土産にスカーフをいただきました。そして、この連休中は久しぶりに焼肉を食べました。ここ数年は誕生日を素直に喜べなくなっていたけれど、こんな風に「いいこと」がいくつかあり、楽しい気分になりました。皆さん、ありがとう！ 

Birthday 

My co-workers celebrated my birthday a bit earlier last week. An English doctor, who arrived in Japan on the same day, gave me a scarf as his souvenir. And then, Eric and I had beef barbecue after a long interval during this long weekend. Such small good things made me happy although I had not been in the mood to enjoy my birthday over the last few years. Thank you, everybody!
