何年か前のことになりますが、バッファローの老人ホームで働いていた頃、ある紳士からこんな言葉をかけてもらいました。「君はきれいだ。内側から輝いているよ。」肉体労働がつらく、何事も自信のなかった当時の私にとって、大きな励みになりました。アルツハイマー病を患わっていたその紳士は、その後しばらくして亡くなりましたが、彼の言葉は今も生き続けています。くじけそうなとき、そっと思い出して、力を分けてもらうのです。
Power of words
Several years ago, when I was working at a retirement house
in Buffalo, one gentleman said to me, “You are beautiful. You are shining from
inside.” It meant so much to me as I was exhausted from the physical job and
not confident with myself at all back then. He was suffering from Alzheimer’s
disease and passed away after a while, but his words are still alive. When I am
feeling down, I take them out from my memories to regain some strength.
